Anti Static Standards: Overview.
The most important thing with undesirable static electricity to know
is: That less relative humidity = more static = more danger. At
Katrina Trading Company we have garments that have been both constructed and
tested to comply with, the most appropriate International standards,
British in the case of anti-static, the reasoning is as follows.
In Australia we have an Anti Static Standard that relates to clothing-
AS/NZS 1020:1995 The Control of undesirable static electricity:
Section 5.2 Wearing Apparel (other than footwear). While giving general
guidelines, this standard does not have a test method and seems to ignore
Relative Humidity as an issue for clothing. Fasteners for clothing also
seem to be largely ignored. We find the British Standards have measurable
test methods that we feel are both more logical and comprehensive:
BS 2050-1978 – Specification for Electrical resistance of conduction
and anti-static products made from flexible polymeric material.
BS 5958 Part 1 – Control of undesirable static electricity
BS 5958 Part 2 – Control of undesirable static electricity, Removal
of clothing:
BS 6524 – BS method for Determination of the surface resistivity of
a textile fabric.
States: 100% cotton o.k. @ >65% R.H. but not at lower R.H. unless
treated with anti static finish.
